The Whio is a small duck that lives in the South Island of NZ and its name translates to blue duck.

Whio have a dark blue waterproof coat, feathers that keep them warm in the winter but when they moult they are flightless and have to resort to swimming and walking for transportation. They also have webbed feet to help them swim.

Like any other duck, Whio live on land but get their resources from the water. Most live in the rapids which is really dangerous because they could drown but luckily they are good swimmers.

I hope the Whio survives for at least another century but there’s only 2000-3000 left. So I hope they survive for another generation.
