The Weta meaning God of Ugly Things is endemic to N.Z.

 

Weta live in pastures, shrubs, in hollow logs, in trees and in excavated holes.

 

The Weta has an interesting appearance. They have six spiky legs and some tusks. Their colour is brown and they have a brown and sometimes black exoskeleton.

 

Wetas lay a lot of eggs. They lay up to 300 eggs in a lifetime. . They lay six to ten eggs at a time. It takes 30 days for the eggs to hatch.

 

Wetas don’t eat a lot of different types of food. They eat leaves on the ground, fruit, seed heads, flowers and other insects. They can be predators and omnivores. 

 

They are the heaviest insects in the world. They weigh 2.5 Kgs.
